BRONTOSAURUS

(thunder reptile)
Brontosaurus excelsus (Marsh, 1879, type ) is synonymous with B. amplus (Marsh, 1881) and is included with Apatosaurus excelsus.
B. ajax (Marsh, 1877/Bakker, 1986) is a junior synonym of Apatosaurus ajax.
B. alenquerensis (de Lapparent and Zbyszewski, 1957/Olshevsky, 1978) is included with Camarasaurus alenquerensis.
B. louisae (Holland, 1915/Bakker, 1986) is a junior synonym of Apatosaurus louisae.
B. montanus (Marsh, 1877/Kuhn, 1965) is a nomen dubium included with Atlantosaurus montanus.
When a museum mount was first constructed a number of mistakes were made - the forelegs belonged to Camarasaurus , and too few vertebra e were included. In 1979 it was realised that both Brontosaurus and Apatosaurus were in fact the same animal and as Apatosaurus had been named earlier it took precedence.
