Dinosaur Models

Dinosaur models come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes, and are produced and put together for a number of different reasons.  Form the large life size models that grace the museums of the world to the small take-home Tyrannosaurus models resting on people’s bookshelves, the range of different dinosaur models is almost as big as that of the dinosaurs themselves.  Children and adults alike continue to be fascinated and enthralled by the various dinosaur species, many of which have made their way into model form in one way or another.  Dinosaur models are also an important way that scientists study dinosaurs, and the skeletal modeling of dinosaur holotypes can tell scientists a lot about dinosaur structure and behaviour.

Following on from the success of Benjamin Waterhouse’s concrete dinosaur models in 1851, many museums have made space for the modeling of various dinosaur species in their exhibitions.  Models are a great way for people to get an accurate impression of the size and grandeur of these magnificant creatures, and are always a favourite feature at museums around the world.  One of the most famous dinosaur models is the model of a Tyrannosaurus rex in Drumheller, Canada – which is known as the world’s largest dinosaur at a height of 25 metres and a length of 46 metres.  While this model is significantly larger than any known members of the T-Rex species, lots of other model makers around the world pay a lot more attention to reconstructing the correct size and scale of dinosaur species.

The continuing popularity of dinosaurs around the world has also giving birth to the relatively new industry of collectible dinosaur models, one of the industries which has sprung up to cater for people’s love of all things dinosaur.  While people have been collecting dinosaur models for a while now, new advances in plastic technologies have made much more accurate and life like models available.  Dinosaur models of many known species can be purchased, and vary both in their accuracy and their size.  Dinosaur lovers can now surround themselves with small models of their favourite dinosaur species, in glorious intricate detail and beautiful colouring.  Some models come pre-assembled and others are meant more as projects for people to assemble and paint themselves.  Whether it is the life size dinosaur models in museums and parks around the world, or the small collectors models that you can find online and in hobby shops;  dinosaur models are a great way for people to get an accurate impression of the structure of many different dinosaur species.
