The Mammoth was an ancestor of the present day elephant. It lived within the last million years, in the Pleistocene period and was hunted by early man. The Mammoth’s heavy layer of fat, thick wool covering and long, coarse hair protected it from the severe temperatures of the Ice Age. It reached a height of 12 ‘ and lived in Artic tundra. The frozen remains of a Woolly Mammoth were discovered in Siberia in 1907.
